Asphalt Shingles

We do Steel, Flat, Modbit, EPDM, TPO, Ice Guards.

There are many different types of Asphalt Shingles and Manufactures of these shingle types. A basic entry type of shingle is a 25 year 3 tab shingle. In our experience they don’t  last very long and can start experiencing failures after 10-12 years and so are not really worth the trouble as most of the cost of your shingle job is in the labour and disposal fees. Architectural Shingles that have a fiberglass backing are now available from several manufacturers and can come with up to a 50 year warranty on the shingle.

How Long Does it Take to Install Asphalt Shingles?

Replacing asphalt roofing depends on the size of your roof, the difficulty, access, pitch and location of your roof. The Sales person can give you an idea once they have measured and assessed your roof to determine roughly how long a job your roof will take to complete. Keep in mind the timeline for replacing your roof can be affected by the weather. If it’s raining or there is a threat of rain it can cause delays. We access each day’s weather based on the weather radar each morning.

How Much Maintenance Does Asphalt Roofing Require?

Asphalt is a relatively low-maintenance roofing material, but a little care can go a long way toward extending its life span. Regular roof inspections are a must, as they provide an opportunity to identify and address small issues before they can cause serious damage.

Cleaning the gutters and removing debris from the roof can also help keep the shingles in tip-top condition.

Is Asphalt Roofing Bad for the Environment?

Asphalt is a petroleum by-product, so it isn’t exactly environmentally friendly. Producing this roofing material is energy-intensive. However, the EPA and several other organizations are trying to mitigate the environmental impact by improving recycling. Recycled asphalt roof shingles are now starting to be used for paving and in the manufacture of new rooftop materials.

Should You Consider Architectural Shingles Instead?

Architectural or Designer Shingles contain asphalt, but their design makes them more durable — they typically carry warranties of 35 to 50 years, which is up to 25 years longer than a conventional roofing shingle. In addition, Architectural Shingles offer the look of more expensive roofing materials, but are much easier to maintain. Given all their advantages, designer shingle installation is often well-worth the slightly higher price.

However, choosing the correct shingle is only a small part of your project. Choosing an experienced installer that have been in business more than 10 years and have the distinction of being the top installers in the region are imperative to having a long life expectancy of your roof. Shingles don’t fail very often but if your roof is installed incorrectly it may have to be re-done. Nobody wants that expense. Do it right the first time.
